The artwork by Piero della Francesca, one of the most extraordinary and enigmatic of the Renaissance is the pride of the village of Monterchi.
The “Madonna del Parto”, one of the most famous frescoes by Piero della Francesca (260x203 cm), dates from about 1455 to 1465, comes from the chapel of “Santa Maria di Nomentana” and is kept in a especially arranged museum in Monterchi.
Piero painted the artwork on the back wall of the church over a smaller fresco of the fourteenth century, by an unknown local artist, representing a Madonna with Child, recently declared a “Madonna del Latte”, found in 1911 by the restorer Domenico Fiscali on the occasion of the detachment of the “Madonna del Parto”, wanted by the Superintendence to Monuments, for reason of protection and maintenance.
The Virgin is pregnant, in the middle of a tent opened by two angels. She wears a simple blue dress with openings which allow the white underwear, a symbol of her purity, to be half-seen. With one hand she caresses her womb, a gesture of protection and at the same time a fierce ostentation of the ongoing miracle. The other hand is resting on her hip. The tent welcoming the scene is decorated with pomegranate flowers, evocative of the future passion of the Christ.
